In October 2014, Nawaz Sharif was arrested at the airport while returning from London, where he was receiving treatment for lymphoma. He was released on bail in February 2015 after the court ruled in his favor that he was not receiving the required medical treatment in London.

Before his ouster on corruption charges, Sharif served as prime minister from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999. He was part of Pakistan’s last civilian government between 2008 and 2013. During that time, he was prime minister for one term and was the first premier of Pakistan to make poverty a priority in his election program.
