Protesters and police are clashing in a Southern Illinois tourist area after two men were shot and killed there during a violent confrontation, authorities said.

The violence, which started in a Crittenden County gas station and fast-food restaurant and ended with gunfire in a desolate subdivision, has ignited the state’s second such double homicide in less than a week.

A 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old man died Sunday after gunfire erupted outside a restaurant in the village of Crittenden, the county coroner’s office said.

The two men were shot outside a Crittenden County Quickstop, where Sheriff’s Sgt. Alex Deaton said a man and a woman had driven up “at least” five times.

Deaton said the man and woman left the store with the suspect and returned 15 minutes later.

The men confronted the suspect, who opened fire on the two men, said Chris Covell, a spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Deaton said none of the bystanders was seriously hurt.

CNN affiliate WCCO reported that the gas station and McDonald’s were briefly closed as the shooting played out. It turned into a chaotic scene with people running and officers with rifles responding to the shooting.

Two knives were found on the scene, Covell said.

The gunman, who was shot and wounded by police, has been taken into custody, Covell said. He has been identified as 21-year-old Leroy Dole, WCCO reported.

The two bodies were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Macon for autopsies.

The shooting occurred just a few hours after another double homicide in another county.

A shooting in the city of Demopolis left two people dead and three others wounded Friday, police said.

Officers found the shooting scene about 2:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Sam’s Way.

“This is our first double homicide of the year. This is not anything that we didn’t expect to happen,” police Chief Cecil Buford told CNN affiliate WHNT.

The chief said the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident that happened earlier in the day.

Two of the victims were taken to hospitals and three were treated at a hospital. One person is in critical condition.

Demopolis is located about 45 miles west of Birmingham, Alabama.
