Aruna Roy, one of India’s most prominent women leaders, has accused an Indian bureaucrat of convincing her to say that she was a Harvard-educated woman in order to secure a job for a woman he wanted.

CPM leader Roy is responding to a charge made in The National Herald, a newspaper published by the Congress Party.

The National Herald’s website reported:

In her tweets, Roy criticised Indian officials and fellow activists who fell for a scam that made her believe she was a Harvard-educated woman. She said the person, a senior bureaucrat, pressured her to give a statement to the Hindustan Times newspaper that she was an alumnus of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School. He was seeking to make a simple change in the subject line of a statement that she sent. Roy also hit out at Akhilesh Yadav, who was among the opposition party leaders who wrote to the prime minister last month urging him to sack Roy and other persons who had conspired to rig elections. “Yadav and his party have a history of exploiting such instances,” Roy said. But, her colleague and former CPM general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet joined the government’s line of attack, saying that Roy ought to come clean about her involvement in the “enormous unholy alliance of the Congress Party, the NCP and BJP”.

Former DNC chair Donna Brazile is on the case, joining “Fox & Friends” this morning and condemning Roy for her response.

“The easiest thing for her to do would be to apologize and say she was wrong, which she’s not, and also say who was the person who did this and what was their motive,” she said.

Brazile said she “didn’t find her response to be the thing that I hoped would be the case.”

The National Herald’s website on Thursday (not to be confused with Roy’s comments, as they came on Tuesday) posted a statement from Roy, accusing the unnamed individual, a “university professor-turned-custodian of state official information”, of using “military precision and manipulation of conflicting facts” to serve his own “personal agenda.”

Roy said she immediately rejected the offer but the “mysterious” individual later wrote to her, informing her that he had “conferred favour upon” one of the journalists who she had previously written about.
